Note Flash is a useful tool for enhancing your sight reading skills for sheet music. It offers an intuitive approach to learning how to read sheet music notes by leveraging the microphone or a connected MIDI instrument to ensure accurate note playing in the correct octave. Unlike other apps, Note Flash stands out as the only app that includes accidentals (sharp and flat notes) as well as ledger lines, catering to more advanced players. Additionally, Note Flash provides graphical representations of your progress in recognizing notes, allowing you to identify areas where you need more practice.

How to Use

  • For optimal results, connect a MIDI instrument. Personally, I developed and tested Note Flash using a Yamaha P115 Piano connected to an iPhone/iPad using this cable (other MIDI cables should work as well): Amazon MIDI Cable.
  • To use the app, simply play the note displayed on the screen while making sure it corresponds to the correct octave. Note Flash exhibits intelligent note recognition capabilities.
  • If played correctly, the app will present a new note on the screen. In case you can't remember or identify the note, you have the option to tap "Show Hint". Note Flash is designed for infinite practice, transforming note reading into an engaging game.
  • Note Flash adapts to your learning needs by prioritizing notes that you struggle with or spend more time thinking about. Progress graphs for individual notes and both staffs allow you to assess your improvement and identify areas where further focus is necessary.
  • You can choose to practice with one hand or both hands randomly. The app also allows you to display accidentals (sharps, flats) and enable ledger lines to suit the needs of more advanced students.
  • To personalize your experience, Note Flash offers various beautiful themes, and you can even use your own pictures as a theme.
  • As a distraction-free app, Note Flash doesn't contain any advertisements.

Please note that the app requires microphone access to listen to your piano. Rest assured that the app doesn't connect to the internet, ensuring the privacy and security of your microphone data, which remains exclusively stored on your device.

I strongly recommend using a MIDI connected piano for optimal performance. If you encounter issues with note detection when using the microphone, you can adjust the "Sensitivity" setting in the app's configuration. The default value is 5.

I developed this app with a passion for addressing the challenges I personally faced when learning to read music for piano. Traditional paper flash cards were simply ineffective. I truly hope that Note Flash proves beneficial for you and your students!
